Food Food Glorious Food
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY I found my food post- it wasn’t eaten just hiding. Here it is, with timely additions! Last Wednesday(now about 14 Wednesdays ago) I took the evening off to go to an organic baby food making workshop at GrassRoots. Woohoo! Party. As I was pumping breast milk for Aurora, I started to wonder if I should have chosen something cooler to go to since it was to be my 3rd outing in 7 1/2 months. I went anyway, and it was pretty cool. I had already been making organic purees for Aurora

What ‘divisive’ means in the animal protection movement.
What ‘divisive’ means in the animal protection movement. I have grown used to hearing accusations that Gary Francione’s animal rights position, in particular, is ‘divisive’.[1] As an animal rights advocate, Francione claims that nonhuman animals who are sentient are rights bearers. He is opposed to them being used by humans and regards their use by humans as rights violations. This seems to be a pretty standard way of expressing oneself if one takes a rights-based view of things. However, as

shake your peaches
Ran into the (vegetarian-but-persuadable) Red Meat Ranger and her consort, Papa Sueno, at the farmers' market this morning, and they had fabulous news. Not just that RMR was making dinner for Shar and Jackie, and that I could join them, provided I showed up with a homemade pie made with my Frog Hollow Farm Suncrest peach bounty, but that RMR's cabaret-performance trio, Pussy Tourette, would be reuniting for (at least) one fantastic performance, on the main stage at this year's Folsom Street Fair

High in tofu vegetarian diet causes dementia, or is it the other way around?
BBC News - July 4, 2008: Eating high levels of some soy products - including tofu - may raise the risk of memory loss, research suggests. The study focused on 719 elderly Indonesians living in urban and rural regions of Java. The researchers found high tofu consumption - at least once a day - was associated with worse [...]

Wagga Wagga? - Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia
Jump to the full entry & travel map Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Australia Of course, the morning we left Tasmania was spectacularly beautiful and sunny, but that's only to be expected. We had an early morning drive from Lonnie to Devonport, and then we had a flight back to Melbourne. Rainy, cold Melbourne. We had such a long day of traveling, we didn't feel much up to the sites, so we just ran some errands, picked up dinner at Lord of the Fries, and hung out at the hot

Bush and Maholm
And so the Pirates are looking to bounce back from yet another ugly loss, with yesterday's being so bad that it got Tom Gorzelanny demoted to AAA Indianapolis in it's aftermath. The Brewers have been streaking for a while now and with a win, they'll probably move into a tie with the Cardinals for the NL Wild Card lead (the Cards are losing late 4-2 to the Cubs right now ... UPDATE: Cards came back and won 5-4). That's a long cry from the team that floundered around .500 early in the season with

Roughing It on the Fourth: Ice Cold Vodka with Jalapeno and Lime
In India they called it a Risky Venture. After last night, I’d call it a Great Recovery. Sometime between the corn and the fireworks, a wild wind suddenly blew through the trees, tossing their leafy tops like whitecaps on the sea. Moments later fat rain drops, the first in a parched while, splotched the deck. The lights flickered and died. Also the air conditioning. No matter. We flung open the windows and lit the votive candles, all 27 of them. While the rain spattered, a flock of ecstatic frog

Shopping List
You may find this the most boring post ever, in which case, feel free to move on ... Lucy of Our Very Own Little House posted her itemised shopping bill for a week as a snapshot in time record and inspired me to do the same. Mine breaks down into three: meat (bought monthly), organic fruit and vegetable box (delivered weekly) and a weekly run round the supermarket. I usually shop on Thursday evenings, so this is my grocery list for the week beginning Thursday July 3rd. Conversions - 1 kg is ar

On post-colonial shadow lines and having one's Fourth-of-July cooking get blogged!
I don't generally blog about my personal life here, although I'm sure it is reflected in some of my writing. I have to make an exception now, however, due to a rather unusual Fourth of July dinner we got invited to last evening. We got to hang out and swim with several friends, old and new, and their families, and savour a variety of delicious vegetarian foods from the grill and the frying pan.

Campaign Follies.
Barack Obama raised obscene amounts of cash during the primaries, but now the DNC faces a daunting task in trying to hold a convention. It also faces holding itself up to ridicule by trying to promote a "green" agenda and a "green" menu: Overly ambitious environmental goals — to turn the event into a “green” convention — have backfired as only three states’ full delegations have so far agreed to participate in the program. Negotiations over where to locate demonstrators remain unsettled with

Galen and Sumre's wedding
My Brother's only Child Galen is 30 almost 31 and we figured that since he had not dated much (that we knew of) that we would never get married. Last year he introduced us to Sumre. She came to Thanksgiving dinner with our whole family. (brave soul) She was quiet, thin, and a true VEGAN. In a family full of meat eaters. There was hardly anything that she could eat, as I had cooked with dairy everything! But she made it through the dinner, and just as she was about to give a big sigh of relief...

Too Nice for the Gossip Biz
AB Comes Through Agent Bedhead, keeper of the sacred words "Pete Doherty," has once again demonstrated her kindness and generosity by putting up a free ad for me. Thanks, AB. I would fix you a steak and a peach cobbler. If you werent in Oklahoma. I hope she has given up that insane vegetarian nonsense. What would Jessica Simpson eat? In other news, my tasty new old Smith & Wesson 27-2 in blue with the 5" barrel has arrived in Miami. Hopefully I'll be able to connect with my dealer this week,

Hummus Place
We recently tried out Hummus Place at 109 Saint Mark’s Place in Manhattan. Hummus Place is vegetarian and just about everything can be made vegan if you ask. Health Salad This was a healthy serving of healthy veggies- tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions in a super light dressing. Although a simple salad, there’s nothing like tiny niblets of fresh cool veggies to balance the face-stuffing that will ensue, what with the piping hot pita bread and ultra creamy hummus. Your tummy will thank you for fil

How To Eat Healthy Traveling - Part Two, Dining Out
Last week I shared some of my travel secrets on how I manage to eat healthy when traveling. This week I’m going to focus on eating away from home again - but this time more in the dining out arena. So this applies whether you are traveling as last week, or just going out for dinner in your own home town. Restaurant Selection The first and most important thing to me when dining out is restaurant selection. Whether or not you will be successful at eating healthy while out on the town is depend

Happy 232rd Birthday!
And this is how we celebrated… +breakfast with Tom’s parents. I got festive with BLUEberry muffins and RED strawberries haha. +seeing my parents in the afternoon, with a little bit of thrift shopping and a lunch date out. +stopping to pick up sparklers and being wooed by other merchandise (I really wanted it ALL, the packages made everything look like a party) +vegan smores! Tom has been getting the marshmallows from Sweet & Sarah locally every now and again and we tried the
