EarthTalk: Healthy fast food? Sunblock?

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 04:00
Dear EarthTalk: I really want to eat healthy and organic but am constantly traveling and on the go. How can I eat fast food without having to always end up at McDonalds and Burger King? – Dylan Baker, Seattle, Washington   The latest trend in fast food is healthy and organic, and luckily for conscious consumers, several chains offering just such fare are taking root in different parts of the U.S. One of the leaders of this small but scrappy pack of fast food upstarts is O’Naturals. The small c

Vegetarian Feijoada

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 03:51
Er... that was the least blurry photo I got of this! I'll have to try to remember to take a better one next time... lol Before I get further into this (and forget), I need to point out that you will want to make the hot pepper-lemon sauce in advance! It needs to sit in the fridge for at least 3 hours to let all the flavours meld together. In case you forget or don't plan ahead (or just don't read my commentary!), you can make it and let it sit at room temperature for 1 hour. Feijoada (pronounc

Crunch Time

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 02:58
It wasn’t a baguette I wanted, when the dentist finally gave me carte blanche to eat anything at all. I needed something more violent, something with so much crunch it prevented me from hearing the person next to me speak. It came in the form of a hazelnut granola. When I settled on what to stir into the oats – hazelnuts (hardly chopped), fat strips of chewy unsweetened coconut, and sticky black currants – it sounded like quite a mouthful. But I wanted the kind of granola that needs to be

Rarebit Risotto

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 01:42
Okay, so I'm putting up a quick post tonight so that I can keep to my promise/goal of doing at least one post per week, but I have to admit it's a struggle! It's been busy as usual and the next few weeks will be even busier. I'm so ready for school to be out and work to be over! I like my job and I only work part time, but I'm ready to have no schedule for a while. What can I say, I got spoiled being a SAHM for 10 years....... Anyway, the recipe for tonight is one a tried a few weeks ago as I w

Do you tofu? I do.

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 01:42
Tofu. Is there another food so misunderstood, so unjustly maligned? Some people don't simply dislike tofu, they hate it. Why? Here's my theory about tofu antipathy: It's not the taste (there isn't... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Curry Leaves: Mystery Ingredient Lends a "Muscular" Taste to Indian Cooking; a Whiff of Scorched Brakes

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 01:37
Fresh curry leaves, plucked in a Hindu family's garden in Kerala, lend a pleasingly bitter edge to fish, coconut and vegetable curries. They have nothing to do with curry powder. Fresh curry leaves are one of the more mysterious ingredients in Indian cooking. These green, almond-shaped leaves have nothing to do with curry powder, of course. Nor are they related to the lacy, pale grey curry plant that appears at herb stands in early summer. But curry and curry leaves do have one thing in common:

A Dozen Eggs, She said…….

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 00:45
. . . like that would be easy for me. Yeah. Right. Not in this world. Acquiring a dozen chicken eggs for cooking breakfast and making hard boiled eggs for lunch used to be a breeze. Heck, when I was a small kid, no bigger than Al Gore’s brain, the milkman delivered eggs to the freaking house! Yes! Really! In the early morning before sunrise his truck would make the rounds, as reliable as the mailman. Today though, we don’t have milkmen nor mailmen. We have mail carriers and eggs in the supermar

Improve Your Health By Becoming A Vegetarian May 12, 2008 - If you are thinking of becoming a vegetarian you may be debating if it is for health reasons or because you do not like the thought of animals dying to be used as food. You may ask yourself will it really make much difference in the scheme of things. Individually it [...] Kategorie: Gesundheit & Medizin |

The Phyllo Creation

Vegetarian - Mon, 2008-05-12 00:22
Thanks to everyone who recommended different dishes that incorporate phyllo dough and curry. I ended up creating a samosa-like dish with onion, ground turkey and a grated potato flavored with curry and ginger inside phyllo triangles. I paired it with some watermelon, sauteed zucchini and onion and a salad (basic greens with garbanzo beans, artichoke hearts, tomato, celery and green peppers). Oh, and milk. :) My next recipe challenge is finding a tasty vegetarian meal that won't break the ban

Lavender Cake

Vegan - Mon, 2008-05-12 00:06
When I was in 9th grade, we read a book in which the main character eats a lavender cake. I cannot remember the book, though I'm pretty sure it was 18th/19th century English Literature a la Jane Eyre. The teacher brought us all a piece of lavender gum so we could experience what it was like to eat lavender (there were probably 200+ students in all of her sections, I went to a very large high school, so one piece of gum was really all that was reasonable). Anyway, that piece of gum did not even

Veganism and shoes…

Veganism and shoes… May 11th, 2008, 7:06 pm For those who embrace a totally vegan lifestyle this goes beyond not just eating any animal products, this can also extend to clothing and even things like your shoes. Most people don’t stop to realize if they have leather soles as an example, that shoe would contribute to the death of animals. It’s something I went through when one of my daughters was vegan, and without the internet, it would be difficult to find vegan shoes since few of the store

Pictures! This is my entry in the ColorWars reverse-caption contest: It was warm and sunny this afternoon. Everyone was enjoying it. It’s amazing what a little work and less than $20 worth of supplies from the hardware store can do to get you more organized. This is my “network closet” (you can’t really see the LAN patch panel, off frame to the right) that also holds all my tools. ATP New York Proves That Indie Rock Has Become a Cushy Croquet Party for the Cool Kids

ATP New York Proves That Indie Rock Has Become a Cushy Croquet Party for the Cool Kids Since it seems the recently announced NY ATP festival has been the recipient of near universal acclaim, I feel it necessary to assume the role of the bitter vintner, and squash the first flush of sour grapes. My gripe is not with the lineup, which is unassailable. Yes, I want curators My Bloody Valentine to bleed my ears with monitor squall, yes I want to see The Meat Puppets perform the album from which

It would be much funnier if it was intelligent. 2) "It’s a mock portrayal of feminist and ANTI-feminist writers, enfasizing [sic] the fact that one type is ostracis
